Becoming an iceberg

We affectionately call Fr Sinisa our fearless leader, but now we will have to add “fearless dreamer” to the title.  If only we could all dream as big!  His sermon at the Vespers service last Saturday was undoubtedly a call to action, both inspiring and compelling.  If you weren’t able to hear it in person, please click through to read the full sermon here:

It is absolutely essential that our parishes cease to exist as islands and begin to recognize each other as part of one Orthodox family.  Or as Father beautifully put it, we need to cease existing as ice cubes melting in the ocean, and become one iceberg, long-lasting and capable of turning more of the ocean to ice.  As a school team, we have witnessed the beauty and power of pan-Orthodox fellowship and co-operation during this last year of building up Heavenly King, and it is a source of endless blessings.

Since our last newsletter, the HKOA team has continued to meet and discern the ways in which we are being called to work in our community.  Our long-term goal, without any doubt, is to open an independent school for our children.  There is so much to do alongside that mission, not the least of which is strengthening the bonds of unity among our churches.  The simplest (and most fun) way to do that is by gathering regularly, so we have been dreaming up all sorts of events to do just that.

Please save the date for a Game Night on Bright Friday, April 29th.  It’ll be from 5:30-8:30 pm at St George Orthodox Church, 121 Harvard Avenue E.  We plan to order pizza (hurray for fast-free Fridays!) and play board games and just generally have a great time.  This event is not just for young ones, but for all of us who are young at heart.  RSVP so that we know how much pizza to order!  We’ll send a reminder out closer to the day.

We have plenty more events in the works and are developing a calendar to share with you soon.  In the meantime, if your parish is hosting an event, please let us know and we would be happy to spread the word.  Visit our website Events page regularly to see what’s coming up!

If you head there now, you’ll see an exciting opportunity for our youth: a retreat that is being organized for Grades 7-12 in Saskatoon over the May long weekend.  You can also take note of our weekly homeschooling co-op, if there are any interested families out there.  Here, we’ll make it easy for you.  Just click here to find out more.

Praying that you have a fruitful final day of Great Lent, as we approach the bridge of Lazarus Saturday and Palm Sunday and dive deep into Holy Week… and then… unbridled joy!  Oh, the sweet anticipation.

With love in Christ,

The HKOA Team
